In the Panhandle, your fuel is mostly decided by which side of the map you live on
Around the Emerald Coast the gas question splits cleanly along geography, and that split is unusual enough to lead with. Inside the metro, the natural gas that feeds a standby generator often comes from a city-owned utility rather than a private one. Pensacola Energy, run by the City of Pensacola, distributes natural gas across much of Escambia County, and the Okaloosa Gas District, a public utility, does the same across Okaloosa and parts of Walton and Santa Rosa. Out on the barrier islands and the rural stretches, there is frequently no gas main at all, and propane rules by default.
So the fuel choice here is rarely a matter of preference. It is set by whether one of those municipal gas systems reaches your street. Get it wrong and you end up with a generator that starves during a long outage or a fuel setup that never clears inspection. Municipal natural gas, where Pensacola Energy or Okaloosa Gas reaches you
Where one of the public gas systems runs down your road, natural gas is the low-maintenance option day to day: nothing to fill, and as long as the main holds pressure, nothing to run dry. The wrinkle worth knowing is that these are municipal utilities, so the account, the tap coordination, and any meter work go through the city or district rather than a statewide private company.
