Start with a walk-around: what salt air does to a unit

Before any oil comes out, a good technician circles the machine looking for what the coast has done to it. On beach-adjacent homes in Destin, Navarre, and around Pensacola Beach, salt in the air settles on the steel enclosure, the hinges, the exhaust, and the electrical terminals and corrodes them faster than any inland schedule assumes. A start failure on the coast is frequently not an engine problem at all. It is a green, crusted battery terminal or a pitted contact inside the control panel where salt-heavy moisture crept in.

So the inspection looks for rust lifting the paint, corrosion on the ground lug and battery posts, a compromised enclosure gasket that lets damp air reach the electronics, and wasp or dirt-dauber nests packed into the intake and exhaust. None of this shows on a diagnostic readout. It only shows to someone standing at the unit, which is the whole argument for a physical visit rather than trusting the weekly self-test.

The service items themselves

Once the condition of the machine is known, the hands-on work on a typical air-cooled home unit runs roughly like this:

  • Engine oil and oil filter. Drained and replaced. Panhandle heat and humidity age oil faster than the mild-climate interval in the manual expects, and a unit that ran long hours through a storm may be due well ahead of the calendar.
  • Air and fuel filters. Swapped so clean air and clean fuel reach the engine. Coastal pollen and salt haze are hard on intake air.
  • Spark plugs. Pulled, inspected, cleaned or replaced, so the engine catches on the first crank instead of laboring.

  • A real transfer test. Utility power gets cut at the automatic transfer switch so the entire sequence plays out the way it will in a storm: the unit senses the loss, cranks, comes up to speed, and takes on the actual household load.   • Connections, mounts, fuel line, and regulator checked for wear, corrosion, and looseness.

Why the battery is the usual culprit

When a standby unit clicks during an outage but never turns over, the battery is almost always why. It reads perfectly fine sitting idle, then collapses the instant the starter pulls current from it. Gulf Coast heat is punishing on lead-acid batteries and routinely drops their real life below the two-to-three-year figure quoted nationally. The June deadline: pre-season is the local hook

Hurricane season opens June 1, and the sensible move here is to get the unit serviced in spring, before the season starts, not during it. The reason is purely practical. The moment a named system enters the Gulf, every installer’s phone lights up and the calendar fills within hours, and nobody wants to learn about a dead battery while a cone is tightening on Okaloosa or Bay County. What a tune-up tends to run

A single annual service in the Panhandle generally falls in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars for a standard air-cooled home unit, with liquid-cooled or high-hour systems higher, and parts usually billed separately. Those are general ranges only, set by the local installer based on your equipment and access, and nothing here is a quote.
