A standby generator is designed to run continuously through bad weather. It lives outside in a weatherproof enclosure, it doesn’t care about rain, and it’s built to carry your home’s load for days. That’s the baseline. The question isn’t whether the machine can run through a hurricane, it’s whether your specific installation was engineered to survive one. On this coast, that comes down to four things, and every one of them is an installer decision, not something the generator handles on its own.
Wind: the engineered, anchored pad
This is the big one, and it’s where out-of-area or bargain installs quietly fail. A generator that just sits on the grass or on a generic slab can be shifted, tipped, or launched by hurricane-force wind, and a generator that’s moved is a generator that’s off.
The Florida Building Code (Section 1609) requires standby units to be mounted on an engineered pad and physically anchored to withstand the design wind speeds mapped for your location. Those run from roughly 130 mph in the more inland parishes up toward 150 mph near the coast in the wind-borne-debris zone, meaning coastal Pensacola and the Emerald Coast beaches carry the toughest requirements. The anchoring bolt pattern that passes inland won’t necessarily pass near the water; it has to be designed to the wind map for your exact address. Water: elevation in surge and flood zones
Wind gets the headlines, but on the Gulf, water is often what actually kills a generator. Storm surge and flooding can submerge a ground-level unit, and a flooded generator is a dead one, which is a special kind of heartbreak, because the backup system fails at the exact moment it was bought for.
For homes in surge and flood zones, Perdido Key, Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, low bayou lots, and much of coastal Bay County, the fix is elevation. The generator gets set on a raised pad above the base flood elevation so surge can’t reach it. Why standby beats a portable when it matters most
It’s worth being blunt about why standby is the right tool for hurricanes specifically, because a portable generator is a fraction of the price and tempting.
A portable only works if someone is home, awake, and willing to go outside to start it and refuel it every few hours. During a hurricane, high wind, driving rain, and often an evacuation order, that’s exactly when you can’t or shouldn’t be outside fussing with a generator.
